When you pay an amount of income tax, which is more than the actual amount of the tax payable, an income tax refund will arise. Your income tax refund status will show the status of the amount, which is liable to be paid to you. The returns are processed by the Income Tax Authority and they will issue a refund to you. You can check the refund status online in order to determine when you will receive the amount.
You need to verify if you went through one of the four below-mentioned situations in order to gauge your eligibility for a tax refund.
If you paid a higher amount through self-assessment but your liability is lower through regular assessment.
If the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) in case of salary income is higher than your liability through regular assessment.
If your income is taxed in a foreign country with which the government has an agreement of avoidance of double taxation and the same income is taxed in India.
If there were undeclared investments in the income tax return.
Check the refund status online
After you claim the income tax refund, you will be able to check the status online. You need to log in to the TIN-NSDL website and enter the Permanent Account Number (PAN) in addition to the assessment year. You will then be able to check the refund status.
In the case of expired returns, the refund is marked as canceled and expired. Refunds that are presented for payment expire after 90 days. If you notice a refund returned in the status, it means that the refund was sent through a speed post but has been undelivered and is returned back to the source. It has been canceled and retained in the Cash Management Product Centre.
Alternatively, you might notice the income tax refund status as processed through the direct credit mode but failed due to some reason. If the refund status shows ‘Paid’, it means that you have received the refund through Electronic Clearance Service (ECS) but the amount has not been credited in your bank account. This might be due to wrong account information with the bank. If your refund status shows outstanding demand from the previous year, the refund will be adjusted against the outstanding balance from the past year. Lastly, if your online refund status shows processed through NEFT/ NECS, it means that the refund has been processed; however, if you have not received it yet, verify your bank account details to ensure that there is no discrepancy in the same.
There are different steps you can take to ensure that your refund is processed without any delay. Depending on the status of your income tax refund, you will have to take the necessary steps. The process time for refunds is anywhere between two months and six months from the date of filing your income tax return online. You will receive the refund through a check or it will be directly credited to your bank account.
